This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes
necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. Students will
learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety
and handling rules, shooting fundamentals and positions, selecting
a pistol, shooting sports and activities, and much more. Ammunition
and range fees not included in course fee.
This course is designed
to present the basic knowledge and skills, and explains the
attitude necessary for the safe handling and storing of guns
in the home. The course will familiarize participants with the
rules for safe gun handling, identifying and unloading different
types of firearms, types of ammunition, and the cleaning and
storage of pistols, rifles, and shotguns in the home.
This course teaches firearm instruction, responsibility,
and safety, and is the NRAs response to the American
publics need for a rifle orientation program for new
shooters/purchasers. First Steps teaches only the most basic
shooting skills, and is not a complete course in the traditional
sense of the word. It is, however, a hands-on introduction
to the safe handling and proper orientation of one specific
rifle, as well as an introduction to rifle safety, parts,
and operation; ammunition and the fundamentals of rifle shooting;
an introduction to shooting from the benchrest position; and
an introduction to rifle cleaning, storage, and training opportunities.
These skills require regular practice, and this orientation
encourages students to obtain additional training, such as
the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course. Ammunition and range

in target shooting. Through the course, the shooter will learn
rifle knowledge and safe gun handling; rifle parts and operations;
ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of rifle shooting;
shooting positions, i.e., standing, prone, kneeling, and sitting;
sighting-in and sight alignment; as well as rifle sports and
activities. Again, this course deals only with basics; basic
knowledge, skills and attitudes the essential elements
to owning and using a rifle safely. Ammunition and range fees

This course is designed to teach the basic knowledge, skills
and attitudes necessary for the safe and proper use of a shotgun
in shooting a moving target. Through the course, the shooter
will learn shotgun knowledge and safe handling, ammunition
knowledge and the fundamentals of shotgun shooting, as well
as shotgun games, sports and activities. However, the purpose
of this course is to teach basic shotgunning skills; it is
not designed to teach the sports of skeet, trap, or similar
activities, which should come after the basic skills are learned.
